British visitors to Azerbaijan might just feel a little more at home while getting a taxi home, after the makers of the iconic London black cab agreed to sell 1,000 to a company in the Republic.

The f16m deal will see 1,000 TX4s make their way to Azerbaijan to a private company – the Baku Taxi Company.

The deal has seen shares in parent company Manganese Bronze take a positive leap by nearly 50 percent yesterday, and has been described as the biggest in the company’s history.

The taxis will be supplied by Manganese Bronze’s joint venture partner Shanghai LTI.

The first Mercedes CLS class first went on sale in 2004. Since then it has established a strong position in the four door Sedan market. Although there was a mixed response to the styling, commentators generally agreed that this vehicle achieved all new levels of refinement for the classy brand.

In designing the new CLS 500 the expert Mercedes team have opted for a more confident,  aggressive appearance. This is exhibited most clearly at the front of the vehicle, where a large grille and extravagant trademark star can be found. Performance car enthusiasts may also notice that the hood is longer and the overhangs shorter than on previous models.

Under the bonnet you will discover a 4.7 litre 402 bhp engine, complete with twin turbos. The car can achieve a reasonable 30mpg+ and less than 210g/km of CO2. It is clear that Mercedes are beginning to take their environmental responsibility seriously.

One of the standout features of the CLS is the fantastic steering. It is completely electronic, but doesn’t suffer from the pulsing or erratic weighting which similar systems do. Motorists can expect to be astounded by the smooth handling and rapid response rate of the helm.

Speed demons will be interested to hear that the CLS will accelerate from 0-62 mph in little over 6 seconds. The car will not go any faster than an electronically limited 155mph, which is enough for a truly exhilarating ride. You can expect the impressive V8 engine and the exhaust to let out a very satisfying roar as the vehicle speeds up.

Another superb element of the new Mercedes is the 7-speed, 7G tronic automatic gearbox, which offers almost effortless changes. You will begin to feel some resistance if you hammer the CLS into submission, but this is only to be expected. Drivers can choose between three modes of operation. While the car is running in manual you will make changes using either the accessible buttons on the reverse of the steering wheel or the gear lever.

The original CLS was in the convenient position of having no clear competition. However, the Audi A7 sportback is primed and ready to do battle with

this time around. Each of these vehicles will rely heavily on their appearance and brand image, with the CLS expected to come out on top.
